The first weekend of the year saw some of our swimmers racing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at both the Wigan Life Centre and Darwen Leisure Centre.

Christmas and New Year already in the rear view mirror this past weekend was an important one for a number of reasons.

At Darwen racing took place each of the 3 days and our swimmers were trying to achieve Lancashire County consideration times or lower them to make sure they are comfortably within the consideration times.

At Wigan we saw some of our youngest members racing for the very first time as well as swimmers who may have just missed out on the consideration times for Counties this year, who looked to continue their journey in the crazy world of competitive swimming.

We start at Wigan with the racing action taking place on Sunday afternoon. We had 21 swimmers take part in this gala with an age range of 8 to 11. As mentioned above for some this was the very first time they had ever raced and for others they continued their racing journey. As always the coaches on poolside have come away from the gala very proud of all the swimmers and have mentioned how well all our swimmers did.

We saw many great swims which lead to a big number of new Personal Bests, a lot of courage, guts, and determination as well as great team spirit which we always want to see and hear.

In total the swimmers won 25 medals at the gala which consisted of 9 Gold, 9 Silver and 7 Bronze which is a fantastic achievement against very talented swimmers.

Below we say well done and congratulations to our medal winners:

  • Leona M = GSS
  • Grace W = GGGG
  • Rose N = SSB
  • Ava W = GGGS
  • Thomas W = GSBB
  • Rossa T = S
  • Lily Mc = BB
  • John W = SSB
  • Rowan T = B

We now move our attention a little further North and look at the action that took place over in Darwen!

This gala really does provide the highest of highs and the lowest of lows as this was the last chance for swimmers to achieve and hit the consideration times set for this years Lancashire County Championships.

The gala was a full schedule with every event available for swimmers to take part in and in total 25 swimmers raced over the weekend either as a Wigan Wasp or with Wigan Best.

As mentioned above the weekend provided many highs and unfortunately some lows when swimmers missed those consideration times by hundredths of a second. All the swimmers put every ounce of effort and determination into each race.

The standard of racing from each of our swimmers was top notch and hopefully they take this forward into the season!

As I was helping over in Darwen I saw some unbelievable racing from our swimmers this weekend, however my highlight of the weekend was Anya J trying out her new start dive technique. Hopefully we don’t see it again anytime soon(haha)

Over the weekend at Darwen our swimmers took home 39 medals in total, which include 18 Gold, 11 Silver and 10 Bronze.
